A record of process & intention.
This page is born from a desire to explain myself & share my influences. In doing so, I hope to answer a few questions I’ve been asked over the years by friends, followers, and peers. Most of all, I want to clarify my intentions as a creative.
reskaqy has its genesis as a screen name in my earliest years spent online playing games like Neopets & Coke Studios (where I assembled my first ever mixes). The internet, alongside the library, has always been a vital source of inspiration. I've spent as much time lurking in digital spaces as I have in the stacks, discovering nerd lore on pages like the Mega Man Homepage, Ben's World of Transformers, and Rebel Scum, or obsessing over deep cuts on the Internet Nirvana Fan Club while learning how to play songs on Ultimate Guitar.
Building my own web presence & embracing life as a digital artist, relying on my DAW, samples, and virtual instruments alongside my guitar feels like a way of bringing everything together, especially as I avoid the mainstream social media & streaming conglomerates that are sapping our creativity by expecting us to cater to an algorithm.
The modern incarnation of reskaqy began as miss emvy in December 2019 after purchasing my first audio interface & diving into DIY recording. I shared small projects on SoundCloud, experimenting across genres & participating in online challenges like She Shreds Media's #1RAD in early 2020.
In the fall of 2020, I created Kitten Spitt with a friend to share punk covers while honing my skills recording guitar, bass, & vocals. As a duo, we released the Covered in Spitt EP in April 2021, receiving airplay on college radio stations across Canada.
Between 2020 & 2022, I also created & distributed the DIY Post-Cheese Zine, sharing my love of punk & adjacent genres. In 2022, I expanded my creative practice into radio, beginning to produce programs for CHSR.
Seeking to grow as a songwriter, I applied for an ArtsNB Emerging Artist Grant to create the body of work that became Invisible Fiends, released in late 2022. Following that, I stepped away from music for a period of reflection, taking some time to write new songs & reimagine past material while tending to health. The songs of Invisible Fiends were reworked into Ecstasies to complement the lyrics written for the forthcoming Ashes, pushing myself into new creative territory.
Now, resuming the "reskaqy" mantle, I'm stepping forward with a new sound & artistic direction that blends guitar, voice, beats, & synthesis.
Forever fascinated with the strange & unusual...
Below is a curated selection of media that has influenced me creatively, intellectually, and emotionally. These are not “best of” lists, but a partial reflection of works that have shaped my own development. Their inclusion is not an endorsement of the personal beliefs, actions, or character of the people involved in their creation. I can’t always stay current with every creator’s public or private behaviour, and I hope these selections are viewed in that light.
If you resonate with any of my creations, then these might be of interest to you...
I've previously released music as Kitten Spitt & miss emvy. Those projects are now defunct & not available on streaming services.
